In case you missed yesterday’s hoopla, Upshot and The Source released our 10 Trends for 2010. Be sure to grab yourself a copy!
Not surprisingly, we’re already seeing supporting evidence for these trends. For instance, Trend #5, entitled After the App, warns of the imminent sense of “app overload” that consumers will experience as their phones and social networks become saturated with an unmanageable number of apps. The inevitable result: app pruning, and only the most useful and/or most entertaining apps will survive. (Will your brand’s app make the cut?)
CNET just posted an article asking, “How many apps do you really need for your iPhone?” They point out that smartphone users install, on average, 65 apps on their phone. As competing app stores try to catch up to Apple’s Walmart-o’-apps, the implication is that multifunctional, exceptionally useful, or exceptionally entertaining apps can close the content gap much faster than simply loading up these stores with narrowly-focused applications. So, if you brand is considering a jump into this space, know that you’re competing for some very valuable real estate on the consumer’s app menu. The best way to break through the clutter is to think about how to maximize the reach of your proposed app.
